MBABANE – South African businesswoman Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize has been given full control of Mbabane Highlanders following the official transfer of ownership from former director Alfred ‘Ally’ Kgomongwe.
The transfer puts an end to months of uncertainty and confusion surrounding the capital city club’s leadership. Kgomongwe confirmed on Tuesday that he had handed over his 80% stake in the Eswatini Premiership side to Mkhize, allowing her to take over operations ahead of the new season.
“MaMkhize will be running Mbabane Highlanders from this season. I was the rightful owner and have now transferred the team to her. She’ll decide with the club patrons and elders how long she will be at the helm,” said Kgomongwe.
The handover comes after tensions around the team’s attempted rebranding to Mbabane Highlanders AM FC. The process had hit a stumbling block when current director Bheki ‘Rubber’ Simelane demanded E1 million in compensation for the name change.
Kgomongwe, who also owns Botswana’s Extension Gunners, said the situation was starting to affect his credibility in regional football. “It was damaging my reputation. I run my businesses with integrity and I’m relieved this matter is finally behind me,” he said.
The team’s Public Relations Officer, Lington Gule, confirmed the development and said preparations were underway for the upcoming 8 Bet Trade Fair Cup, where Highlanders will face Ezulwini United in the preliminary round.
The squad is currently holding its pre-season camp in KwaZulu-Natal under the guidance of coaches Ernest Mavuso and Sifiso ‘Barnes’ Mkhulisi. Former Royal AM general manager Richard Makhoba has joined the club in the same role.
Meanwhile, Kgomongwe announced the dismissal of Musa Masuku as the club’s representative in the Board of Governors, stating that Masuku had not acted in the best interest of the club.
