MBABANE – The Joint River Basin Authorities Project Board (JRBA-PB) and the Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission (INMACOM) have formalised a partnership aimed at improving how Eswatini manages its water resources.
The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday, marking a new phase of cooperation in the face of mounting water challenges linked to climate change, population growth, and rising demand across multiple sectors.
The agreement sets out a framework for closer collaboration in key areas, such as monitoring hydrological data, protecting ecosystems, and developing small-scale hydropower solutions. It also prioritises strategies for building resilience in water-dependent communities and upgrading irrigation systems to boost agricultural production.
The MoU comes as Eswatini takes a more active role in regional water governance through basin-level initiatives. Under the GEF-8 programme, JRBA-PB is already leading local interventions, including restoring ecosystems and rehabilitating infrastructure in targeted areas.
Both institutions will also focus on strengthening links between surface and groundwater systems, enabling smarter planning and improved water security.
Officials said the MoU would create more room for knowledge exchange and technical capacity building while supporting Eswatini’s long-term water goals through practical, coordinated action.
