JOHANNESBURG – Volkswagen South Africa has issued a safety recall affecting 253 Polo sedans sold since 11 August 2022 due to concerns over defective seat belts that may fail in the event of a crash.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) confirmed the latest recall this week, following an earlier notice on 17 July involving 18 Polo sedans. Both recalls relate to incorrect installation and a mix-up in the belt webbing for the front and rear passenger seats.
NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba said the most recent alert concerns the rear right seat belt, although both rear belts require inspection. The fault could compromise the belt’s restraint function, posing a risk of serious or fatal injury in an accident.
The Commission has urged all owners of Polo sedans purchased from 11 August 2022 to visit a VW-approved dealership immediately for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the affected components.
The recall falls under the Consumer Protection Act, which mandates manufacturers to act when products present a safety risk. Authorities are calling on consumers to treat the issue with urgency.
