JOHANNESBURG – Mazda has officially unveiled the all-new third-generation CX-5, confirming that the SUV will arrive in South Africa early in 2026 following its global rollout next year.

The revamped model marks the first full redesign of the CX-5 in nearly a decade. Built on a completely new platform, the SUV features a longer wheelbase, wider stance, and increased height. These adjustments contribute to expanded interior space, including a boot capacity of 500 litres — up by 61 litres compared to the outgoing model.

Mazda has reworked its Kodo design language for the new CX-5, giving it updated front and rear styling. The rear design takes cues from both the CX-60 and BMW’s X1, while the Mazda logo on the boot has been replaced with bold MAZDA lettering.

Inside, the SUV introduces a minimal, “uncluttered” cabin layout featuring a new steering wheel, ambient lighting, and improved materials. Central to the changes is a freestanding infotainment display available in 12.9- or 15.6-inch sizes, supported by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Traditional control buttons have been phased out in favour of touchscreen icons, although the classic gear lever remains in place.

Under the bonnet, the CX-5 will be offered with petrol and hybrid options, with no diesel variant included. The base model is powered by a 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine producing 132kW and 242Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. A 24-volt mild-hybrid version of the same engine, producing 104kW and 238Nm, will be available in Europe with front- or all-wheel drive.

Mazda South Africa CEO Craig Roberts said the CX-5 is one of four new models confirmed for local release, with the SUV expected to land in the country in the first quarter of 2026. Pricing and full specifications are due to be revealed closer to launch.
