PRETORIA – President Cyril Ramaphosa has responded to explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, stating the matter has serious national security implications.

Mkhwanazi made the claims during a media briefing at the SAPS provincial headquarters in Durban on Sunday, accusing Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of political interference and linking him to an underworld figure facing criminal charges.

The Presidency issued a statement later that night, confirming that the President had been made aware of the developments and was treating the matter with urgency. Ramaphosa warned that public exchanges of accusations and denials were damaging public trust in the police service and distracting it from its core mission.

He urged all involved to show restraint, noting that the ongoing feud risks fragmenting the unity of the SAPS.
