JOHANNESBURG – Mayor of Mbabane Thulani Mkhonto joined fellow African leaders in Johannesburg and Tshwane for the U20 Sherpa Meeting and African Mayors Assembly, a key event under South Africa’s G20 Presidency focused on urban development and localising global goals.
The meeting brought together mayors from across the continent to exchange ideas on sustainable finance, resilient infrastructure, and the creation of inclusive cities. It was jointly hosted by the City of Tshwane and the City of Johannesburg.
Speaking during the sessions, Mayor Mkhonto said Mbabane is committed to sustainable urban development and called for stronger local action alongside global dialogue. “As a municipality committed to sustainable urban development, we recognize the critical importance of both global dialogue and local action,” he told delegates.
The gathering served as a platform for cities to share strategies for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while addressing Africa’s unique urbanisation challenges. It also opened opportunities for collaboration among cities facing similar demands around climate resilience, public services, and inclusive economic growth.
Mayor Mkhonto attended the sessions alongside host Executive Mayor of Tshwane Dr. Nasiphi Moya, Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Dada Morero, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Dr. Namane Dickson Masemola, and several other African mayors.
