Eswatini’s Ministry of Health has issued an alert following an increase in cases of conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye. The surge in cases has been particularly noticeable in the Shiselweni and Lubombo South regions. While most cases show mild symptoms, the ministry is closely monitoring the situation and working alongside healthcare facilities to manage and prevent further spread of the infection.

Pink eye, an infection that causes redness, itching, and discharge from the eyes, is highly contagious. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergens, and spreads quickly through direct or indirect contact with infected individuals. Symptoms include watery or thick discharge, swollen eyelids, increased sensitivity to light, and a gritty feeling in the eyes.

While most cases are self-limiting, individuals experiencing severe symptoms or vision disturbances are urged to seek immediate medical attention. The Ministry of Health has recommended several measures to help prevent further spread of the infection, including practicing good hygiene by washing hands frequently and avoiding touching the eyes with unclean hands. The public is also advised not to share personal items such as towels or makeup.

Anyone showing signs of pink eye should visit a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment. Those confirmed to have the infection are advised to stay home, particularly from schools or workplaces, until they recover to prevent infecting others. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of commonly touched surfaces is also recommended.
