Thousands join Justice For Thabani protest march

Matsapha: Thousands of students and Members of the public joined the #JusticeForThabani protest march to Sigiodvweni police station.

The protest march is organized to demand Justce For Thabani Nkomonye who allegedly died in the hands of police.

It was organized by University of Eswatini (UNESWA) students in solidarity with Thabani Nkomonye who was a law student at the University, and was joined by students from other tertiary intuitions and members of the public.

Marchers marched to Sigodvweni police station where they delivered the petition to the station commander.

The marchers were chanting songs of the struggle and calling for the National Commissioner of Police to give convincing answers regarding the death of Thabani Nkomonye.

Police had a tough time controlling marchers as the strike become somewhat violent, and marchers were burning tyres and chanting songs.

The protest marched, moved from Sigodvweni to Manzini.

Since the death of Thabani, police have given contradicting statements regarding the events that led to his death and towing of the car he was driving, something which has irked the public to demand answers.

Meannwhile government has cvondemend the police brutality. Acting Prime Minister Themba Nhlanganiso Masuklu has stated that government will conduct its own investigation regarding Thabani’s death.

Nkomonye’s body was found on last Thursday in a decomposed state by his family members and police who were searching for him.

Nkomonye’s picture had gone viral on social media after his family and police reported him missing and circulated a notice requesting members of the public to assist locate him.

According to the notice that was circulated widely, Nkomonye was last seen in Ngwane Park, Manzini at around 9 pm last Saturday. The notice went on to state that he had been driving a Black Mazda Demio with registration number VSD 584 AS when he went missing.

It is alleged that Nkomonye died in a police chase. Thabani’s uncle Sakhile Dlamini who spoke on behalf of the family said it is alleged that police came to the scene, towed the vehicle, and took it to Sigodvweni police station. Dlamini was quoted as saying the police claimed not to have seen his body. And for some reason, it was not recorded at the police station that the vehicle was on their premises.
