Buhleni – Police at Buhleni have opened an inquest after the body of a human fetus, believed to have been about seven months old, was discovered at Nkomazi on Thursday afternoon.
The fetus was found at about 4pm on July 16 by a 66-year-old woman after her dog returned from a nearby forest carrying a plastic bag.
According to information from the police, the woman was seated at her home in the Nkomazi area when she noticed her dog emerge from the forest with the bag in its mouth. She went to inspect it and was shocked to find that it contained a human fetus, which the dog had begun mauling.
The woman immediately alerted the police, who attended the scene and opened an inquest.
Police said preliminary assessments indicate that the fetus was approximately seven months old.
Investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the fetus came to be abandoned in the area.
Police have appealed to anyone who may have information that could assist with the investigation to report it to the nearest police station.
