Ngwenya Temabuya turns AI fears into a mission to empower others
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

MBABANE— What began as curiosity driven by fear has transformed into a passion for innovation for Limkokwing University of Creative Technology student, Ngwenya Temabuya, who recently completed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme offered through the University of Eswatini.

Currently pursuing a degree in Public Relations, Ngwenya recently completed her internship at the Ministry of Health in the Lubombo region. Outside of academics, she also runs a hairdressing business, combining entrepreneurship with creativity.

Ngwenya said she initially enrolled in the AI course after coming across a Facebook post advertising the programme. Like many people, she believed AI could eventually replace human jobs and wanted to understand whether those fears were justified.“I wanted to know more about AI because I thought it was here to take away our jobs.

My expectation was to gain clarity on how it works and whether it really posed a threat to employment,” she said. However, the training completely changed her outlook.

She explained that the programme helped her realise AI is not designed to replace people but to support them by improving efficiency, enhancing productivity and creating new opportunities across different industries.“The course completely shifted my perspective.

AI is not here to replace us but to support and enhance our work. It is a powerful tool that can make tasks easier and help us adapt to a rapidly changing world,” she said.Throughout the programme, Temabuya gained practical knowledge on how AI functions, its applications across various sectors and the importance of using the technology responsibly.

She plans to incorporate AI into her future career in Public Relations by improving communication strategies and embracing digital innovation.

Having successfully completed the course, she is now eligible to train others and hopes to use that opportunity to promote AI literacy within her community.

“My message is simple: AI is not something to fear. It is something to learn and use wisely. Instead of seeing it as a threat, we should view it as a partner that can make our work more impactful,” she said.

Looking ahead, Temabuya believes AI education has the potential to empower Eswatini by equipping citizens with skills needed in the modern digital economy.

She hopes to raise awareness, inspire young people and encourage more communities to embrace technology as a catalyst for growth, innovation and lifelong learning.
