Mbabane: MTN League champions Young Buffaloes are undecided on whether to partake in 2020/21 Total CAF Champions League or not.
Eswatini government classifies football as a high risk sport in the fight against the novel Coronavirus alongside basketball, rugby and others who remain banned. Team Chief Executive Officer Sandile Gwebu said the non resumption of football makes it difficult for the army side to make a decision on the tournament that begin on November 9.
“As a club we have not made a decision. The non-football restart make things difficult for us especially if you take to consideration that the CAF Champions League starts at the beginning of November. As Buffaloes, the product remains priority hence preparations for such tournaments are essential. Even if football can be allowed from today, time is already against us in terms of preparations,” he said.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, associations abandoned their domestic competitions and selected representatives in CAF club
competitions. According to CAF, associations may register their representatives during the engagement window between 1 September and 20 October 2020. All engaged teams must respect the Club Licensing procedure and cooperate with their respective Associations, as non-licensed clubs will be refused participation.
“CAF Club Licensing is in our DNA as a club,” Gwebu added.
