Mbabane – Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Pholile Shakantu has welcomed Claver Gatete, the United Nations Under Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, during his working visit to Eswatini.
Shakantu said the visit presents an opportunity for the country to benefit from Gatete’s vast experience in economic governance and regional development. She also extended appreciation to George Wachira, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Eswatini, for facilitating the engagement.
Gatete currently serves as Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, a key United Nations body responsible for promoting economic and social development across the continent. His visit to the Kingdom comes at a time when Eswatini continues to pursue partnerships aimed at strengthening economic growth and regional cooperation.
Before taking up his role at ECA, Gatete held several senior positions in the Government of Rwanda. He served as Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure from 2018 to 2022 and previously as Minister of Finance and Economic Planning from 2013 to 2018.
His career also includes leadership at the National Bank of Rwanda, where he was Governor from 2011 to 2013 and Deputy Governor from 2009 to 2011. Between 2003 and 2005, he worked as Secretary General and Secretary to the Treasury in Rwanda’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.
Earlier, from 2000 to 2003, Gatete was Director General for Economic and Social Affairs in the Office of the President of Rwanda. In that role, he represented the President in the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and coordinated the National African Peer Review Mechanism.
