LOS ANGELES — South African singer Tyla has claimed her second Grammy Award, winning Best African Music Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards for her hit single Push 2 Start.
The 24-year-old artist was unable to accept the award in person after an overwhelming number of red-carpet interviews delayed her arrival, causing her to miss the Premiere ceremony at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California, where the category was announced.
Push 2 Start has become one of Africa’s biggest musical exports this year, accumulating over 440 million streams on Spotify and tens of millions of views on YouTube. The track’s global success has reinforced Tyla’s position as one of the continent’s leading pop stars.
Tyla triumphed in a highly competitive category, beating nominees Burna Boy with Love, Davido featuring Omah Lay with With You, Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin with Hope & Love, and Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid with Gimme Dat.
Despite missing the ceremony, Tyla turned heads on the red carpet, wearing a look styled by Ronnie Hart. She donned a Dsquared2 Fall/Winter 2013 collection dress with a feathered skirt that flowed into a dramatic train, complemented by a low-dipping neckline adorned with gold embellishments.
The Best African Music Performance category, introduced recently to recognise the global influence of African music, has quickly become one of the most competitive and celebrated Grammy honours.
Meanwhile, Grammy host Trevor Noah, who was nominated for Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording for Into the Uncut Grass, lost to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who won the award for Meditations The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama during the Premiere ceremony.
