Mbabane – The High Court has granted bail to 20-year-old Siyabonga Makhanya from Sitibeni, who faces a murder charge.
Makhanya has been in custody since June 2025, accused of killing Mxolisi Stopper Mavuso, who allegedly died after being beaten with a sjambok, wire and an iron. He applied for bail citing special circumstances and his right to freedom.
He told the court that following his arrest by Mbabane police, he first appeared at the Mbabane Magistrates’ Court before being advised to apply for bail at the High Court. He has been held at Sidvwashini Correctional Service Centre and has appeared in court multiple times while waiting for his case to be transferred. Makhanya noted that the High Court has a backlog of pending cases and no trial date has yet been set.
Makhanya also mentioned that four of his co-accused have already been granted bail, which he said should work in his favour. He said he turned himself in to the police with his aunt after learning they were looking for him, maintained his innocence, and promised not to interfere with witnesses or the case.
He explained that he left school in Grade 6 due to financial challenges and survives by doing piece jobs such as washing cars, supporting his aunt who cares for several family members. He said his parents are not part of his life and their whereabouts are unknown. He added that continued detention was causing hardship for his family and that police investigations had been completed, reducing the risk of interference.
The High Court granted Makhanya bail of E15 000, with E7 000 to be paid in cash and E8 000 secured by surety.
