Pretoria – South Africa’s military readiness is facing renewed scrutiny after a recent internal audit revealed that only 27 percent of soldiers are fit for deployment, raising concerns about the future stability of the country’s defence operations.

The findings were shared this week through defence sector reports showing that thousands of troops can no longer be deployed. This situation has forced the South African National Defence Force to rotate the same limited pool of healthy personnel for missions, a situation analysts say is becoming increasingly unsustainable.

Defence analyst Ricardo Teixeira explained that long standing concerns about the military’s condition have now reached a critical point. He said years of constrained budgets, weak leadership structures and a deteriorating logistics system have contributed to the decline.

Teixeira noted that the current recruitment levels within the force are far too low to reverse the trend. He described the logistical system as having broken down entirely, linked partly to shrinking financial resources.

He added that even a substantial increase in the defence budget would still leave the institution trailing other national departments in funding. Treasury’s reluctance to allocate more resources to the Department of Defence remains a major hurdle.

Teixeira warned that financial support alone will not resolve the crisis. He said the situation requires decisive leadership and a structured plan led by a minister who understands the long term challenges facing the defence establishment.

According to Teixeira, the problems cannot be resolved quickly. He estimates that the SANDF will require at least a decade to recover its operational capacity even with determined intervention.
