Mbabane – The African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) says the signing of the new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between Ubombo Sugar Limited (USL) and the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) is a major step forward in the country’s pursuit of sustainable and reliable locally generated electricity.
Speaking during the ceremony, ALSF Senior Legal Counsel and Sector Lead Leria Arinaitwe said the agreement signalled more than the completion of a contract, describing it as a reaffirmation of the kingdom’s determination to strengthen domestic power generation.
Arinaitwe noted that ALSF’s collaboration with Eswatini dates back several years to the development of the short-term generation expansion plan, which laid the foundation for a structured, transparent and competitive procurement process. She said it had been encouraging to witness the steady progress of the three successive procurement tranches that form part of the country’s broader energy strategy.
She reaffirmed ALSF’s commitment to supporting the kingdom with technical expertise to navigate complex power sector negotiations and ensure that governments across the continent secure fair and balanced agreements.
“Our role is to ensure African governments negotiate on equal footing using world-class expertise,” she said. “We will continue to walk this journey with the Kingdom of Eswatini until all three procurement tranches are concluded.”
Arinaitwe also expressed appreciation to McCarthy Denning LLP and Energy Systems Planning (Pty) Ltd for the work done on the PPA and the project as a whole.
