Mbabane – The Kia Carnival is not your typical multipurpose vehicle (MPV) or minivan. While it technically fits the MPV classification, it breaks away from the conventional boxy design and practical, no-frills functionality associated with most vehicles in this category.
The Carnival stands out with its sleek, SUV-like presence and plush interior, making it a standout option for those looking for a vehicle that offers both luxury and functionality. Its design, both modern and elegant, sets it apart from the usual MPVs and minivans that dominate South African roads.
The vehicle, which replaced the Grand Sedona, was rebranded in South Africa three years ago. Recently, it underwent a facelift that introduced fresh styling elements and updated technology, refining its appeal.
Updated Model Range
The Kia Carnival’s local lineup has been streamlined from four variants to two: the entry-level EX and the flagship SXL. Recently, the EX model, priced at R1 049 995, was tested, offering a more affordable option compared to the more expensive SXL.
The new model features updated styling, with square-shaped accents, modern LED headlights, L-shaped daytime running lights, and a refreshed Tiger Nose grille. At the rear, a new bumper and light cluster, connected by a horizontal light bar, give the Carnival a contemporary look. Sliding rear doors and a redesigned tailgate offer ease of access, further enhancing the vehicle’s practicality.
Interior Upgrades
Inside, the Carnival EX has undergone significant upgrades. The analog instrument cluster is replaced with a 12.3-inch digital screen, offering modern tech features alongside a matching 12.3-inch infotainment display. Kia has introduced digital buttons for climate and infotainment controls, first seen in the Sportage.
The cabin retains its luxurious design, combining two-tone leather, soft-touch finishes, and imitation alloy inserts for an elegant feel. One of the Carnival’s strongest selling points is its vast interior space, especially in the rear. With both rows of seats upright, the boot offers an incredible 1,139 litres of storage, more than many SUVs on the market. For those in need of even more space, folding the third row creates a cavernous cargo area that can rival any van.

Performance and Efficiency
The 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine remains the sole powertrain option for the Carnival, paired with an eight-speed torque converter transmission. The engine delivers a solid 148kW of power and 440Nm of torque, providing ample muscle for both city driving and long road trips. It offers several driving modes, including Eco, Sport, Comfort, and Smart.
Despite its size, measuring 5,155mm in length and weighing over two tons, the Carnival handles surprisingly well. Its smooth driving dynamics make it a pleasure to navigate, whether on long-distance trips or daily commutes. The updated model boasts a fuel consumption rate of 9.3 litres per 100km in city driving, while the previous model averaged 7.8L/100km during road trips.

A Vehicle Like No Other
In South Africa, where the minivan category has traditionally been associated with family-friendly yet dull designs, the Kia Carnival defies expectations. Its combination of SUV-like luxury, ample space, and unique design has made it a niche, yet increasingly popular option. Unlike its American counterparts, often seen as mundane, the Carnival stands out as a versatile, stylish choice for families and road-trippers alike.
Jaco Van Der Merwe, Head of Motoring at The Citizen, notes that for those seeking a vehicle that combines the space and practicality of a van with the sophistication and performance of an SUV, the Kia Carnival truly stands out, setting new standards in the MPV category.
