Gaborone – Relations between Lesotho and Botswana took another step forward with the visit of Lesotho’s Natural Resources Minister, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko, to Botswana on Thursday. Minister Moleko was greeted by his counterpart, Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, at the start of the engagement.
According to a statement from Lesotho’s Ministry of Natural Resources, the visit provided a platform for both ministers to recommit to the longstanding, cordial relations between the two nations. Discussions during the visit focused on strengthening cooperation in the minerals and energy sectors, particularly with regards to mining exploration and the development of energy resources.
The visit follows a trip made earlier this year by Lesotho Prime Minister, Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane, to Botswana. During his visit, Botswana President Advocate Duma Boko reflected on the historic, cultural, and linguistic ties between the two nations, pointing out that the Basotho people are an integral part of Botswana’s social fabric. He also highlighted regional cooperation projects, such as the Lesotho-Botswana Water Pipeline, a critical infrastructure project aimed at benefitting southern Botswana and supporting the establishment of a 5MW hydropower station.
Additionally, President Boko acknowledged Lesotho’s efforts to rehabilitate youth affected by substance abuse, expressing interest in collaborating on these initiatives. “Botswana and Lesotho share deep bonds, great opportunities, and a future of productive cooperation,” he said, reinforcing the importance of continued partnership for the mutual benefit of both nations’ people.
The visit comes as the two countries approach their 60th independence anniversary celebrations in 2026, marking Botswana’s independence in September 1966 and Lesotho’s on October 4, 1966.
