Mbabane – A 50 year old Sigangeni man has been sentenced to pay a fine of E5 000 after he admitted to assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute that occurred on 23 August 2025.
The accused appeared today before the Mbabane Magistrates Court, where he was convicted of contravening Section 77 (1) (a) of the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Act of 2018 whereby the court was informed that on the day of the incident, the accused unlawfully pushed his wife, causing her to fall to the ground, before pulling her by the leg.
When asked by the court to confirm his plea, the accused stated that he understood the charge and pleaded guilty. The accused chose to represent himself rather than an attorney.
When asked why he committed the offence, the accused told the court that he reacted out of frustration after his wife allegedly came to his workplace at Sigangeni clinic and insulted him in front of colleagues and patients in public. He claimed that she had gone there to “harass” him, which led to the confrontation.
During mitigation, the accused apologised for his conduct and pleaded for a linen sentence stating that it was not his intention to assault his wife, also that he has a family that is solely dependent on him.
After putting the accused mitigation factors into consideration and the circumstances that led to the assault, he was sentenced to pay a fine of E5 000, or in default of payment 5years imprisonment.
The custodial sentence was wholly suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during the suspension period.
