Mbabane – Families preparing for long festive season journeys are once again looking for spacious vehicles that will accommodate relatives and luggage. Many local motorists continue to source affordable models from South Africa’s used market, where several seven-seater options remain well within reach for buyers working with budgets below E250 000.
The latest figures from AutoTrader, compiled by Jaco van der Merwe, Head of Motoring at The Citizen, reveal a mix of practical multi purpose vehicles and rugged SUVs that suit large households, especially those planning cross border travel.
While SUVs remain popular across the region, budget friendly MPVs continue to attract attention for their manageable running costs and relatively recent model years. The Renault Triber and Suzuki Ertiga are among the strongest contenders. They may not match premium SUVs for power or interior materials, but they offer reliability, usable space and fair comfort for families.
The Renault Triber emerges as a standout choice at an average used price of R194 305. It records the lowest mileage in its segment at 39 558km and averages only two years in registration age. Its 1.0 litre engine is fuel efficient at about 5.5 litres per 100km, although the 52kW output can feel modest when carrying seven passengers.
The Suzuki Ertiga brings more interior room and a stronger 1.5 litre petrol engine producing 77kW and 138Nm. It also offers a larger cargo area at 803 litres. On the used market, it averages E214 950, but tends to be older at around five years with higher mileage of 100 806km.
Among SUV choices, the Nissan X Trail remains a reliable pick. The first generation model, offered in petrol and diesel, holds strong appeal due to the diesel version’s economy of 5.3 litres per 100km. It carries a five star Euro NCAP safety score supported by six airbags and brake assist. With an average price of R187 792, it is cheaper than the Triber, though older at around 10 years and with mileage averaging 145 814km.
Shoppers willing to consider higher mileage vehicles often compare the Toyota Fortuner with the Land Rover Discovery 4. The Fortuner, particularly the D 4D 3.0 litre turbodiesel, is well known for durability and build quality. Used units under E250 000 are typically first generation models averaging 237 595km and 15 years in age.
The Discovery 4 offers a more refined driving experience and a premium cabin, attracting motorists who want comfort and advanced features. With an average used price of E212 710, mileage of 228 512km and an age of 14 years, it delivers strong presence on the road but requires careful inspection due to frequent concerns about reliability.
For Eswatini families looking to upgrade before their holiday travels, the used market continues to offer a variety of seven seater vehicles that bring together practicality, space and affordability.
