Big Brother Mzansi is more than just a reality TV show, it’s a national cultural phenomenon. The format, produced by M-Net and Endemol, first launched in South Africa in the early 2000s.  After a brief outing, the show was rebooted in 2014 under the Mzansi Magic brand, returning with fresh energy and local relevance.  Following a long hiatus, the third season premiered in January 2022, driving huge interest across the country.

For many South Africans, Big Brother Mzansi isn’t just a game, it’s a mirror of society. The show brings together a diverse mix of people from different backgrounds, sparking conversations about culture, identity, and aspiration. The high volume of applicants (over 13,500 this season) is a testament to how deeply the show resonates  for some, it’s a shot at fame; for others, it’s a platform to tell their story; and for fans, it’s weekly drama and real-life strategy at its most compelling.

At the end of Season 5 “Umlilo” Akhonamathemba “Sweet Guluva” Mbele was crowned the champion. The 23-year-old from Cape Town walked away with R2 million, winning the hearts of viewers with his charisma, authenticity, and strategic gameplay.

Sweet Guluva wasn’t just a game player  he became a national favorite.  His humility, sense of humor, and ability to stay true to himself under pressure helped him forge real connections. After his win, he expressed deep gratitude: “I couldn’t have done this without you.”  Fans rallied around him, and his journey is already shaping a promising post-Big Brother career. In a short space of time Sweet Guluva has managed to feature in DJ Zinhle song and has been involved in acting gigs that have opened more doors for him.
