Mbabane – Nissan has unveiled its all-new Navara, the fourth-generation model, designed specifically for the Australian and New Zealand markets. This marks the first major update to the Navara in 11 years, and it’s set to go on sale in early 2026.
The D27 Navara, as it is internally known, will be built by Mitsubishi at their Laem Chabang plant in Thailand. The vehicle is based on the Mitsubishi Triton, using the same platform and drivetrain. Despite the shared foundation, Nissan has made significant changes to its suspension system with input from Australian engineering firm Premcar, aiming to cater to the unique demands of the Oceania market.
The Navara’s design, both inside and out, draws inspiration from the North American Frontier, with Nissan’s signature V-motion grille and a more rugged, angular aesthetic. However, the most notable shift is under the hood. The Navara ditches its previous YS23 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel engine for the Mitsubishi-sourced 2.4-litre single turbo unit, offering 150kW of power and 470Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, with no option for a manual gearbox.

A highlight of the new model is the inclusion of two four-wheel-drive systems. The lower-spec versions will feature a part-time 4WD system with low-range gearing and an electronically locking rear differential. The higher-spec ST-X and Pro-4X variants receive a full-time 4WD system, complete with seven driving modes, including Eco, Snow, Gravel, Sand, Mud, and Rock, all designed to improve off-road performance.
The D27 Navara is set to be exclusively available as a double-cab model, with a range of configurations that will cater to the preferences of more than 90% of buyers in the region. The truck will also come with a robust list of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking.

Notably absent from the D27’s launch is any mention of a South African release. While the Navara D27 will be sold exclusively in Australasia, the South African market will continue to receive the older D23 model. Nissan South Africa has confirmed that a revamped version of the D23 will be launched next year, with new exterior and interior updates, keeping the model in line with local demand.
