WWE superstar John Cena has confirmed that he will retire from professional wrestling in 2025, bringing an end to one of the most celebrated careers in WWE history. The 16-time world champion made the emotional announcement during the Crown Jewel Premium Live Event in Saudi Arabia, marking his final year in the ring.
Cena, who debuted in WWE in 2002, became a global icon with his “You Can’t See Me” catchphrase and the Dr. of Thuganomics persona. Over his two-decade career, he became one of the most influential and beloved figures in wrestling, headlining major events like WrestleMania and engaging in high-profile rivalries with the likes of Randy Orton, CM Punk, and Logan Paul.
While Cena had previously hinted at retirement, this announcement is seen as his definitive farewell. Fans expect his last major match at WWE’s Survivor Series, with his official farewell scheduled for December at the 31 Capital One Arena in Washington, DC.
His retirement announcement has stirred bittersweet emotions among WWE fans, who have watched him rise to prominence with his charisma, work ethic, and positive influence both inside and outside the ring. Cena’s legacy is also marked by his role in inspiring WWE’s “Cenation,” a dedicated fanbase that has supported him throughout his journey.
Following the announcement, WWE will air a special tribute show in Cena’s honour as part of the ‘Last Chance to Win’ tournament. Fans are also buzzing about Cena’s recent achievement of winning the WWE Intercontinental Championship from Dominik Mysterio in Boston, leading to speculation that Cena might retire as a champion.
Back in 2024, Cena first revealed his plans to retire in 2025 during a show in Toronto, where he told the audience, “I’ve had the most tremendous hardships and some extraordinary moments in my life. Nobody wants to say goodbye, and nobody wants to say when it’s over.”
