Pretoria – Brown Mogotsi has revealed that the mysterious gunman known as John Wick, responsible for assassinating alleged Boko Haram gang members in Mamelodi, Tshwane, is Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Testifying at the Madlanga commission on Tuesday, Mogotsi said that an October 2018 presentation made to former police minister Bheki Cele included photographs of Matlala along with details of his previous convictions. “Commissioner, John Wick was Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala,” Mogotsi told the commission.
Mogotsi further stated that in September 2024, an informant informed him that Cele had shown interest in a R360 million SAPS tender awarded to Matlala, who is alleged to be part of a cartel. The testimony indicates that Cele was aware of Matlala’s identity while he carried out a series of killings targeting individuals believed to belong to a terrorising gang.
John Wick had emerged in Pretoria as an unknown figure, systematically targeting members of the group. Mogotsi’s testimony links Matlala to these assassinations and suggests high-level knowledge of his activities.
The commission continues to examine the involvement of former officials in matters relating to criminal networks and tenders.
