Mkhiweni – The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and NAMBoard, has provided the Bancobi Support Group at Ekutsimuleni with new farming equipment and inputs to improve productivity and enhance resilience to climate shocks.

The support, which includes a 2,000-square-metre shade net, irrigation equipment, and vegetable seedlings, forms part of FAO’s 80th Anniversary and World Food Day celebrations aimed at promoting sustainable food systems and empowering smallholder farmers across Eswatini.

Bancobi, a cooperative of 15 vegetable farmers who have been supplying local markets for several years, is expected to increase output, reduce post-harvest losses, and ensure a steady supply of quality produce throughout the year.

FAO Senior Programmes Officer Sibusiso Mondlane said the organisation remains committed to supporting rural farmers through inputs, training, and market linkages.

Bancobi Chairperson Margaret Mhlanga expressed gratitude for the assistance, saying it would greatly improve the group’s productivity and stability.

“The shade nets and irrigation system will protect our crops from pests and harsh weather, allowing us to maintain quality and support our families,” she said.

Ministry of Agriculture Senior Extension Officer Mazwi Dlamini applauded the group’s dedication, describing them as a model of persistence and partnership.

“Farmers like Bancobi are the backbone of our rural economy. Their resilience inspires others across the country,” he said.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Eswatini’s agricultural sector by improving smallholder productivity, promoting climate-smart farming practices, and reinforcing collaboration between farmers, government, and development partners.
