Tokyo, Japan – Isuzu Motors South Africa (IMSA) could be set to expand its D-Max line-up with a new 2.2-litre Maxforce DDI diesel engine, offering a more powerful yet fuel-efficient option for South African buyers. The D-Max was recently spotted in Japan equipped with the RZ4F-TC engine, which has a displacement of 2,164cc, delivers 120kW of power and 400Nm of torque, and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Its braked towing capacity is rated at 3,500 kilograms.
The spotted vehicle also featured a refreshed exterior with a new front fascia and distinct taillights, along with a modern interior that includes a large central infotainment screen, updated steering wheel, and automatic gear selector, indicating a premium specification. The model is expected to reach South African dealerships in 2026.

Currently, the South African D-Max line-up offers 1.9-litre and 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engines. Compared with the 1.9-litre engine, the new 2.2-litre option provides a noticeable power increase while maintaining efficiency. Against the 3.0-litre engine, it delivers competitive torque at a lower displacement, appealing to buyers looking for strong utility with potentially lower running costs.

The 2.2-litre Maxforce DDI reflects Isuzu’s strategy to optimise its engine range while maintaining the durability and performance expected of the D-Max. Approval for local import or production could give the model a stronger position in South Africa’s competitive double-cab market.
