Pretoria – The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) has officially opened Africa’s first Supercritical CO₂ Encapsulation Facility (SCEF) at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
Director-General of DSTI, Dr Mlungisi Cele, delivered the keynote address at the launch, describing the facility as a major step forward for clean, solvent-free encapsulation technologies.
The SCEF will support the production of high-value, bio-based ingredients for the pharmaceutical, agricultural, food, and cosmetic industries. It is expected to advance sustainable innovation, promote technology transfer, and strengthen South Africa’s bioeconomy by helping local SMMEs transform research into market-ready products.
