Cape Town – Motoring enthusiast Blessing Mtshakazi, known as B-Smirk, recently tested the Haval H6 GT plug-in hybrid SUV on a 2,000-kilometre journey across South Africa, travelling from Cape Town to the Northern Cape’s Augrabies Falls and back.
The coupe-styled SUV impressed with its hybrid setup, combining a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and electric motor for a total output of 321kW and 762Nm. The vehicle cruised comfortably on long open roads, handled overtaking with ease, and kept fuel stops to a minimum.

The trip used a mix of electric and hybrid driving. Recharging stops included Somerset Mall with 31.6 kWh, Piketberg with two sessions totaling 33.9 kWh, and Namaqua Garage with 8.6 kWh. The team also refuelled twice, spending approximately R1,381 per tank.
Mtshakazi praised the SUV’s comfort, noting ample legroom, a spacious cabin, premium finishes, and suspension that reduced driver fatigue even after hours behind the wheel.
The Northern Cape’s vast landscapes and the majesty of Augrabies Falls offered a stunning backdrop, complementing the H6 GT’s performance, efficiency, and long-distance capabilities.
Mtshakazi concluded that the hybrid SUV is capable of repeated long journeys without compromising comfort or economy.
