Johannesburg – Volvo Car South Africa has introduced the updated XC90, the seven-seater SUV that remains a key model for the brand locally. The facelift brings subtle exterior changes, a calmer cabin, and upgraded technology while keeping the space, comfort, and safety features the XC90 is known for.
The refreshed range includes the mild-hybrid B5 and the plug-in hybrid T8 PHEV, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The T8 plug-in hybrid can travel more than 70 kilometres on electric power alone, while the combined range exceeds 800 kilometres. The B5 mild-hybrid uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine with a 48-volt hybrid system, delivering 183 kW and 350 Nm.
Inside, the cabin features new materials, ambient lighting, and a horizontal dashboard with an 11.2-inch touchscreen running Google software and wireless Apple CarPlay. Comfort remains a priority with four-zone climate control, heated seats, and adaptive air suspension across the range.
Safety continues to be a major focus. The XC90 includes Volvo’s suite of driver assistance technologies such as Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, alongside a strong safety cage and extensive airbags.
Volvo Car South Africa’s Managing Director, Grant Locke, said the update continues the XC90’s legacy, blending comfort and safety with improved efficiency and technology.
The refreshed XC90 is available in four variants:
- XC90 B5 Plus – R1 555 500
- XC90 B5 Ultra – R1 657 500
- XC90 T8 PHEV Plus – R1 834 500
- XC90 T8 PHEV Ultra – R1 936 500
All models come with a five-year/100 000 km warranty and service plan, while plug-in hybrids carry an additional eight-year battery warranty. Standard features include Matrix LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, quad-zone climate control, heated front and second-row seats, electric tailgate, and premium audio systems.
Mechanically, the XC90 retains its 2.0-litre Drive-E turbo engines, adaptive dampers, and air suspension, with the T8 plug-in hybrid producing 340 kW and 709 Nm, and a claimed 70 km electric range.
