Manchester City battled to a narrow 1–0 victory over Brentford on Sunday evening, with Erling Haaland once again proving decisive as his first-half strike secured all three points for Pep Guardiola’s side.
The match at the Gtech Community Stadium saw City dominate possession from the outset, and it took just nine minutes for Haaland to break the deadlock. The Norwegian forward used his strength to shrug off defender Sepp van den Berg before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher for his ninth goal of the Premier League season.
City controlled most of the first half, with Phil Foden and Oscar Bobb creating several chances, while Brentford struggled to register a single touch in the visitors’ penalty area before the break. Guardiola’s men suffered a setback when midfielder Rodri was forced off early with a muscle injury, replaced by Nico Gonzalez.
After the restart, Brentford showed greater urgency, pressing higher and creating their best opportunity when Igor Thiago went one-on-one with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian stood firm to preserve City’s lead, which remained under threat as the hosts pressed late on through Michael Kayode’s long throws and Kevin Schade’s runs.
City’s defence, led by Josko Gvardiol, held firm to record a clean sheet and move up to fifth place in the league standings heading into the international break.
Brentford defender Nathan Collins admitted his side’s slow start cost them, saying they allowed City “too much space” in the first half but improved after pressing higher.
Guardiola’s win marked his 250th victory in charge of Manchester City, while Haaland’s consistency continues to define the club’s campaign as they chase leaders Arsenal.
