JOHANNESBURG – Motoring enthusiasts in Eswatini and across the region can expect the arrival of Jaecoo’s latest SUV, the J5, which will be officially unveiled next month.
The J5, positioned as a smaller and more affordable sibling to the J7, was first showcased at the Shanghai International Auto Show in March. It is expected to carry a lower price tag compared to the J7, making it a more accessible entry-level model in the SUV range.
The vehicle will be offered in three trims – Vortex, Glacier and Inferno – and will run on the Chery Group’s 1.5 T-GDI petrol engine, producing 115kW and 230Nm. Unlike the J7, the J5 will rely on front-wheel drive paired with a CVT transmission.

Measuring 4 380mm in length, 1 860mm in width and 1 650mm in height, the J5 rides on the same T1X platform as the J7 with a wheelbase of 2 620mm. Its boot space accommodates between 480 and 1 180 litres of luggage.
Confirmed features include a 13.2-inch infotainment display, a digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone charging and drive mode options: Eco, Normal and Sport. Buyers will also have the option to include leather seats, ventilated front seats and dual-zone climate control.

In overseas markets such as the United Kingdom, where it is branded as the Jaecoo 5, additional features include a Sony audio system, cooled glovebox, heated and electric seats, and ambient lighting.
Although rumours suggested a debut at the Kyalami Festival of Motoring, the J5 is now scheduled for its official unveiling in September. Pricing remains unconfirmed but is expected to start below the J7’s current R519 900 entry-level cost, with estimates suggesting around R450 000.
