Mbabane – Minister of Finance, Neal Rijkenberg, has applauded Eswatini’s tourism sector for its vital role in economic stability and growth, describing it as a cornerstone of national prosperity.
Speaking at the Nkwe Tourism Conference on Thursday, Rijkenberg said tourism has been resilient while being one of the nation’s strong financial performers. Rijkenberg recognised the Hospitality and Tourism Association for the country’s promotion efforts and providing platforms for dialogue and celebration such as this.
He pointed out that Eswatini has successfully maintained a healthy and sustainable debt-to-GDP ratio at approximately 40.7%.
“This figure is not just a number on a balance sheet; it is a powerful signal to the world that we are a fiscally responsible nation, a place where investments are secure and future generations will not be burdened by excessive obligations,” he said.
The minister added that this stability creates an ideal environment for both local and international investors to direct resources into the country, particularly in tourism.
Rijkenberg also underlined an encouraging GDP growth where economic growth is projected at 7.9% in the 2025/2026 financial year, building on 4.8% growth in 2024.
“This growth is a clear indicator of a robust and expanding economy, reflecting increased economic activity across all sectors,” he said.
The minister explained that such growth strengthens Eswatini’s global standing, enhances domestic tourism as citizens gain more spending power, and makes the country more attractive to international visitors seeking enriching experiences.
He stressed that tourism is not just a beneficiary of financial stability, but its major driver.
“Your hard work in marketing our culture, conserving our wildlife, and providing world-class hospitality is what translates our economic stability into tangible benefits for every Emaswati,” he said.
Tourism, he added, fuels job creation, generates foreign currency, and supports the development of rural communities.
Rijkenberg urged for continued collaboration to make Eswatini not only a financial success story but also a world-renowned tourism destination.
