Liverpool have opened their wallets this summer, spending £260 million ($350 million) to bolster Arne Slot’s squad following last season’s record-equalling 19th English top-flight title. The club confirmed new contracts for veteran stars Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah as part of their ambition to maintain Premier League supremacy.
The Reds have brought in German talents Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike to boost creativity and goals, while Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have joined as right- and left-back successors to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson. Defensive reinforcements may not stop there, with moves for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi and 18-year-old Italian centre-back Giovanni Leoni reportedly underway.
Liverpool are also pursuing Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, with a potential British transfer record fee exceeding £115 million dominating summer headlines.
The spending marks a sharp departure from last year, when Liverpool were among the lowest Premier League investors. Proceeds from player sales — including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, and Tyler Morton — have generated roughly £200 million, providing funds for the current spree.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher questioned whether the strategy, including a £69 million Ekitike possibly playing second fiddle to Isak, aligns with the club’s traditions.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot stressed the importance of balance, noting the team’s pre-season showed greater attacking potential compared to last season, despite losing the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on penalties after twice leading.
The squad also carries extra motivation this season to honour late teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in northern Spain last month at age 28. Liverpool have retired Jota’s shirt number, 20, and will display “Forever 20” on their jerseys throughout the season.
