MBABANE – South African fashion designer Thula Sindi has touched down in Eswatini for the first time, bringing with him a fusion of elegance, creativity and a message of African resurgence.
Sindi, who was born in Klerksdorp, North West, and is now based in Johannesburg, arrived in the country for the 2025 edition of the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival, which kicks off this weekend at House on Fire in Malkerns.
The celebrated designer told Independent News that although he has travelled extensively across the continent, this is his first visit to Eswatini — a neighbouring nation he admits he should have explored sooner.
“I’ve travelled most of Africa, but the strange thing is sometimes you miss the places right next to you,” said Sindi. “This is my first time in Eswatini and I’m honestly blown away. The energy, the people — I’m excited to be here.”
Known for his timeless, practical and beautifully tailored clothing, Sindi has been a mainstay in the African fashion industry since launching his label in 2007. He said his longevity in the field has more to do with consistency and integrity than pure talent.
“People always think you have to be the most talented to make it, but what really counts is delivering. Deliver to your customer, keep your word — that’s how you grow,” he explained.
Sindi’s new collection, which he has brought exclusively for Luju, is themed Return to African Future, an ode to the continent’s rich cultural reservoir and creative potential.
“Everyone can see that the rest of the world has hit a ceiling. Africa is where it’s at — our music, our history, our lifestyle — all of it is shaping global trends,” he said. “It’s our time, and collaboration between countries like Eswatini and South Africa is key.”
Sindi’s passion for food, music, and fashion makes Luju a perfect stage for his work and worldview. He said the festival offers not just a showcase, but a meaningful gateway into Eswatini’s market and cultural landscape.
