JOHANNESBURG – Controversial Patriotic Alliance figure and former nightclub boss Kenny Kunene has resigned from his role as Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport after being linked to an alleged murder suspect.
Kunene tendered his resignation just hours after his party, the Patriotic Alliance (PA), suspended him from all political duties. He was reportedly found at the residence of Katlego “TK” Molefe, who is believed to be part of a murder syndicate allegedly involved in the killing of popular musician and entrepreneur DJ Sumbody.
The political fallout intensified following public pressure, prompting Kunene to submit a letter to Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero. In the letter, he confirmed he was stepping down as both a Proportional Representation Councillor and MMC, effective immediately.
He wrote that he was doing so in the public interest, maintaining that the allegations were “unfounded” but serious enough to warrant his withdrawal from public duties. “I am stepping aside from public life, for a period, while my party satisfies itself as to certain allegations that have been raised against me,” Kunene stated.
Soon after, PA President Gayton McKenzie released a letter confirming Kunene’s suspension as Deputy President of the party. McKenzie said the party had already launched an internal investigation and Kunene had agreed not to carry out any official duties during this period.
The City of Johannesburg is expected to name a new MMC for Transport in the coming days.
