MANZINI – Central Bank Governor Dr. Phil Mnisi has urged leaders across Eswatini to be intentional, collaborative, and authentic as the country navigates a changing economic and social landscape.
Speaking at the Unlock Summit held in Mbabane, Mnisi said Eswatini was standing at a critical point in its development journey and warned that failure to act boldly would be a missed opportunity for the nation.
“We have all this potential, but if we don’t take action and craft a compelling collective vision, it would be a tragedy,” he said. “Greatness is achieved—it’s not inherited. Let’s not allow our background to hold us back. Our culture and heritage should propel us forward.”
The summit brought together leaders from government, business, and civil society to explore solutions around leadership, innovation, and sustainable growth. Mnisi spoke during a panel discussion on leadership values and national visioning.
He described mindset as the country’s most valuable form of capital and said intentionality was critical in ensuring meaningful progress.
“You have to stay the course, pay the price, and remain true to your purpose. Without intentionality, not much gets achieved,” he said.
Mnisi, who has led multiple organisations throughout his career, also spoke about the importance of authentic leadership. He said being honest with oneself, with others, and with one’s mission builds integrity.
“I believe leadership is really about influence and impact,” he said. “You don’t need a title to lead. What matters is how you affect the people and systems around you.”
He praised The Key initiative—founded by a young liSwati woman—for its role in creating platforms that spark national dialogue and nurture young leadership. Referring to her as “a daughter of the soil,” Mnisi applauded her vision and said her efforts reflect the kind of leadership Eswatini needs going forward.
As the event drew to a close, he encouraged the younger generation to judge today’s leaders by the impact they leave behind, not just the speeches they make.
He also noted the significance of collaboration in today’s interconnected world, saying leaders must engage beyond their own circles—locally, regionally, and globally.
