MBABANE – Ford has added a new variant to its Territory SUV range as the brand looks to tighten its grip in the fast-growing family SUV market currently dominated by Chinese automakers.
The new Dark Edition joins the line-up as the flagship model, taking over from the Titanium. It lands in local showrooms at a starting price of R733,000, slotting in above the Trend and Ambiente derivatives, which remain unchanged.
After a strong debut year for the Territory in southern Africa, Ford is banking on the bolder styling and tech upgrades in the Dark Edition to grow its market share against both traditional rivals such as Toyota’s RAV4 and VW’s Tiguan, as well as newer Chinese entries like Haval and Chery. Ironically, the Ford Territory itself is manufactured in China.
What makes the Dark Edition stand out is its styling. Gloss-black detailing features heavily across the body – from the grille and mirror caps to the roof rails and skid plate. The roof is finished in black as well, matched with 19-inch ebony alloy wheels and bold black ‘Territory’ lettering on the tailgate.

Inside, the SUV continues the black theme with perforated leather seats, leather trim on the doors and dash, and orange Cyber stitching – a detail inspired by the popular Ford Ranger Wildtrak. A panoramic roof, ambient lighting and electric seats add a premium feel.
New on this model is a 360-degree surround-view camera system, backing up a lengthy list of tech features that include twin 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker sound system, wireless phone charging, keyless entry, and push-button start.

Safety is covered through advanced systems like Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Traffic Jam Assist, and rain-sensing wipers. The engine remains unchanged – a 1.8-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol that pushes 138kW and 318Nm to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
During its launch drive between Lanseria and Gold Reef City, the Territory Dark Edition proved a comfortable ride for families. Back seat passengers – children especially – enjoyed the spacious rear, while the sensitive brakes and throttle took some getting used to, a quirk noted in many Chinese-built vehicles.
Ford is continuing to push its “Family Promise” as a key selling point – a package of 21 ownership benefits that includes mobile servicing, a two-year spare parts guarantee, and insurance support.
Territory pricing (incl. 6-year/90,000km service plan & 4-year/120,000km warranty):
- Ambiente: R593,500
- Trend: R650,500
- Dark Edition: R733,000
