NICE, FRANCE – Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini is currently in Nice, representing His Majesty King Mswati III and the Kingdom of Eswatini at the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference.
The global summit, which began this week, is focused on the theme “Accelerating action and mobilising all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.” Dlamini is expected to address an African Oceans Summit scheduled on the sidelines of the main conference.
The African Oceans Summit is an initiative led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco and is intended to rally stronger political support across the continent for projects centred on the blue economy and maritime development. Dlamini’s participation marks Eswatini’s growing involvement in multilateral efforts targeting ocean sustainability, despite being a landlocked country.
Eswatini joins other African states in discussions that aim to explore the ocean’s economic potential and promote environmental stewardship of maritime zones.
The conference also features a dedicated session titled “Blue Horizons,” focusing on the specific challenges and opportunities facing Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). According to the UN, these nations depend heavily on the ocean for food security, economic livelihoods, and trade access — even when they lack direct coastal access, like Eswatini.
