Bloemfontein, South Africa – The family of 30-year-old Olorato Mongale, whose life was cut short following a date in Johannesburg, laid her to rest on Sunday during a moving funeral service held at Bloemfontein City Hall.
Her body was discovered dumped a few days after she went missing last weekend, having reportedly met her alleged killer recently in Bloemfontein. Despite sharing her live location with friends before the date, Mongale did not make it home.
Her suspected killers, Phila Makhanya and Bongani Mthimkhulu, were both out on bail for previous charges of kidnapping and robbery. Police say Makhanya was killed in a shootout with officers on Friday, while Mthimkhulu is still on the run. The third man initially linked to the crime, Fezile Ngubane, was cleared on Saturday.
Family members questioned the justice system’s decision to grant bail to suspects with known violent backgrounds. Makhanya had pending court appearances, including one in Brakpan, and was a person of interest in another kidnapping case in KwaMashu.
Mourners described Mongale as a joyful, adventurous woman who brought light and warmth to those around her. Her white and gold coffin was carried into the hall, where relatives and friends, some in tears, delivered tributes filled with grief and disbelief.
Criselda Kananda, speaking for the family, called her “a beacon of energy and promise,” and said her life had been filled with love, dreams, and laughter.
One childhood friend recalled Mongale’s haunting dream of writing a final exam and reflected on how her death felt like an unspoken goodbye.
Khanyi Mlambo, who studied with her at Rhodes University, remembered her leadership in campus protests against gender-based violence. “It was her voice leading us in protest. She led us with courage and love,” Mlambo said.
Former colleagues described her as a radiant force who had the ability to connect with people deeply and authentically.
Wits University’s Dean of Student Affairs, Jerome September, said her death reminded the institution of the dangers students face beyond their academic lives. “We are losing brilliant young women to senseless violence. Her life, her voice, her dreams — they all mattered,” he said.
Police Deputy Minister Shela Polly Boshielo addressed mourners, promising justice. “We want Mthimkhulu found — dead or alive,” she told the crowd.
Sindisiwe Chikunga, South Africa’s Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and People with Disabilities, said the country had failed Mongale. “You deserve to live in a country where your safety is not debated. Your memory strengthens our national resolve.”
Mongale’s death has reignited conversations about gender-based violence in South Africa, with renewed calls for justice and urgent reform to the bail system that allowed her suspected killers to walk free.
