KAHLATSI – Officials from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, accompanied by members of the Eswatini Contractors Association, visited KaMagele in Hlatsi on Thursday to assess the condition of Mlulami Dlamini’s two-storey mud house and the site where a new government-sponsored home will be constructed.
The visit forms part of government’s response to support the 45-year-old self-taught builder, whose hand-built structure—crafted with sticks, stones, and mud—has gained national recognition for its creativity and resilience. The structure, completed in 2016, includes a staircase, ensuite bedroom, sitting room, and a basic rainwater collection system.
Representatives from the DPM’s Office were joined by technical experts from the Contractors Association, who inspected the current building and discussed plans for the upcoming one-bedroom house. The Association has committed to providing professional assistance across various disciplines including design, building, wiring, and plumbing.

Construction on the new home is expected to begin shortly.
Dlamini had previously shared that while proud of his achievement, the mud house suffers from leaks and dampness, making maintenance difficult and time-consuming. He also expressed a desire for steady income and formal recognition of his skills.
This site visit follows an earlier pledge by the government to assist Dlamini through the National Disaster Management Agency, and to explore opportunities for skills training based on his natural talents.
