South African television has lost one of its greats following the death of celebrated actor Don Mlangeni Nawa at the age of 65. His family confirmed his passing in a statement released early Wednesday, describing him as a devoted father, brother, and friend.
Nawa’s death, whose cause has not been disclosed, has prompted a flood of tributes from fans, colleagues, and public figures across the country. The family has requested privacy as they grieve, saying details regarding his memorial and funeral will be shared later.
Known for his rich theatrical roots and commanding screen presence, Nawa began his acting journey in the 1980s. His breakthrough television role came in 1993 with the Zulu drama Hlala Kwabafileyo, setting the stage for a prolific career on South African screens.
He became a household name in 1998 when he took on the iconic role of Bra Zeb Matabane in the SABC3 soap opera Isidingo, a character he portrayed until 2014. Many South Africans also remember him fondly as Laqhasha in the popular sitcom ’Sgudi ’Snaysi, where he starred in five seasons.

In recent years, Nawa continued to impress audiences with roles such as King Langa in Shaka iLembe, Thato Mokoena in The River, and a SWAT Commander in the film Losing Lerato.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula joined the chorus of tributes, noting that Nawa’s performances not only entertained but also reflected the real-life struggles and victories of South Africans.
