The Central Bank of Eswatini (CBE) is constructing a new headquarters, fully supported by its E18 billion balance sheet, with construction already underway and progressing in phases. The multi-phase development aims to ensure the long-term operational capacity of the central bank while aligning with regional trends in central banking infrastructure.
CBE Governor Dr Phil Mnisi said the institution is taking a forward-looking approach, ensuring that the central bank remains well-positioned for the future. He pointed to similar moves by neighbouring countries, noting Botswana’s recently completed central bank and expansions in Mozambique, Lesotho, and South Africa.
The project’s first phase includes a 21-storey tower featuring a 5,000m² underground parking level. The first four floors—including the ground level—will each span 2,500m², while the upper 14 floors will each measure 1,200m².
The second phase will deliver a centre of excellence for training, wellness, and conferences. This structure, built alongside existing buildings, will have three floors and a combined floor area of 23,800m², with facilities such as classrooms included. While the existing hotel on site will remain, it will be reserved for internal use and not open to the public.
Phase three will see the addition of a sports centre, staff accommodation, and a parking area equipped with solar panel canopies, contributing 36,500m² to the overall build. A 24,200m² multipurpose hall will also be constructed. Select amenities such as the museum, sports facilities, and the hall will be open to the public, while other areas will remain restricted.
As part of site restructuring, the main entrance will be relocated to Mshanabili Road, opposite the MTN headquarters. The current entry point will serve as an emergency gate, and the road across from Lugogo Sun will be closed to better manage traffic.
CBE’s Chief Operations Officer Mfan’fikile Dlamini added that the project is being used as an opportunity to empower local companies through procurement and construction contracts.
