New MoMo product; Receive money from SA

Ezulwini – MTN customers in South Africa will now be able to send money directly to Mobile Money (MoMo) wallets in Eswatini.

This transpired during an official launch of the new MTN Eswatini product called MoMo Cross-Border Service at the Happy Valley Resort on Monday morning.

At the event, FINTECH Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sam Shongwe said it was an honour and a moment of great excitement for him to be part of a launch of a groundbreaking innovation that promises to change lives and reshape the way money moves between South Africa and Eswatini.

“Today, we proudly unveil a solution designed with one primary goal: to bring families, businesses and communities closer to making financial transactions simple, affordable, and convenient. This isn’t just a financial product; it’s a bridge that connects loved ones, empowers small businesses, and ensures that no one is left behind in the digital financial revolution,” said Shongwe.

The CEO also highlighted that sending and receiving money across borders has been a challenge for many. Families have struggled support one another due to lengthy processes, high costs and geographical barriers. However, with the launch of this service, he said, the MoMo Cross-Border Service, they were saying goodbye to those constraints.

“MoMo now makes it possible for customers in South Africa to send money directly to MoMo wallets in Eswatini. – no paperwork, no queues and no hassle for the recipient. MoMo is more than just a wallet, it’s a gateway to vast opportunities. Over the years, MoMo has grown to accommodate the evolving needs of our customers, bringing solutions that address real challenges. From sending and receiving money to paying bills, buying groceries, airtime, data bundles, MoMo offers a one-stop platform for modern living.”

The CEO added that with this cross-border service, they were taking a significant step in expanding financial inclusion. He said they were creating opportunities for individuals and businesses to thrive, regardless of where they were.

“Whether it’s a parent supporting a child in Eswatini, a trader growing their business or a family coming together in times of need, MoMo ensures that money moves quickly, securely and affordably. At the heart of this service, is our commitment to affordability. We understand the value of every cent our customers earn, and we have ensured that MoMo remains a cost-effective solution for cross-border transactions. Once the money is in the recipient’s MoMo wallet, the possibilities are endless. With just a few taps, our customers can; send or receive money locally, pay for groceries and other purchases, buy airtime, data bundles and minutes, pay bills for utilities and services, transfer funds to and from their bank accounts,” he said.

He said this simplicity and convenience are what set MoMo apart. He said it was not just about receiving money but it was about empowering their customers use their funds seamlessly and effectively.

“While today we focus on South Africa and Eswatini, this is just the beginning. Our vision is to expand this service to other countries, further breaking down barriers and connecting more communities. He also encouraged their customers to keep their MoMo wallets safe at all times. He said customers should refrain from sharing their MoMo wallets PIN numbers and stay vigilant against falling victims of facata scams. He urged their customers to keep their MoMo wallets safe this festive season and not to fall victims of facata scams no matter how the perpetrators may be convincing.
