Mbabane – In just about two months of appointing a task teak to change the fortunes of UNESWA, major changes are taking place at the highest academic institution of the kingdom following an announcement of 43 non-academic, academic and administrative vacancies.

On June 17, 2024, government appointed a 12-member task team to assess the state of affairs at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), with the view to fully understand the limitations and inadequacies.

Minister of Education and Training Owen Nxumalo announced the task team led by Ubombo Sugar Limited Managing Director Muzi Siyaya who has held various senior and executive corporate roles in the country and in South Africa.

Nxumalo said a directive from Cabinet was issued that he addressed the challenges facing the institution. He said he also received pressure from Parliament, as the Ministry of Education Portfolio Committee wanted to know what Cabinet was doing to fix the challenges.

The minister said the task team was expected to source information through interviews, document review, comparative analysis and other effective avenues. According to Nxumalo, it was envisaged that an interim report on the assessment would be generated within the first three months and the final report in six months.

He said the task team consisted of people from various professional backgrounds with undoubted competencies in the four strategic themes to be covered, which include financial management and resource efficiency, academic programmes, governance, management capacity and the funding model of the university.

He explained that the task team members were formed by professors working in universities outside the country and chief executive officers of parastatals.

In recent years, the university had experienced a spate of challenges, which were seriously impairing its growth and compromising the purpose for which it was established, which is to give quality tertiary education to emaSwati.

The minister said His Majesty had tasked the chairman of the council, vice chancellor and Parliament to come up with solutions and not point fingers.
