Mbabane: Government has pledged full support for the two local athletes who tested positive for covid-19. While in Kenya after the end of the world Athletics Under 20 Championship.
Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Harries “Madze” Bulunga said in a statement released Thursday 26 August. The minister thanked the two affected athletes Menziwokuhle Msibi and Ayanda Malaza for their courage in representing the country during the competition, Bulunga assured the two that the ministry is working hand in hand with the relevant stakeholders to ensure their safety.
The minister further thanked the local athletics team doctor Dr. Zabenguni Mkhatshwa for staying behind in Kenya to provide the athletes with all necessary support. Bulunga also confirmed a telephone conversation with the two athletes and their respective parents. The minister also thank the parents of the due for releasing them for national duty and also reassured them of the ministry’s commitment to ensure their return home in good health.
The ministry along with that of health had made sure that Mkhatshwa is granted an extension to her leave of absence in order to stay behind and provide all necessary support to the athletes in Kenya. The minister reassured the parents that the ministry is in constant communication with Athletics Eswatini and that it would continue to do everything possible to ensure that the due are well taken care of and fully recover and return home as soon as possible. The parents assured the minister that they will continue to encourage their children to participate in the local and international sports competitions as this was their passion and a good way to keep them away from dangerous habits while further carrying the potential of opening doors to a brighter future.
