SIPHOFANENI- Emerging Afro pop and hip hop artist Slash, born Lihle Shongwe, is preparing to release an emotional and deeply personal single titled “Gogo Wami.” The 24-year-old musician, who hails from Othandweni under Siphofaneni, says the song is a heartfelt tribute to the woman who became his pillar of strength, his grandmother.
Slash’s life took a dramatic turn while he was in Grade 5 at Othandweni Primary School when he lost both his parents. Left in the care of his grandmother alongside his siblings, he struggled to cope with the trauma. Like many young boys dealing with pain, he began to misbehave and dodge classes during his early adolescent years. However, despite his challenges, he managed to pass Grade 5 with impressive results.
His turning point came unexpectedly during an English class assignment centered on music and dance. Slash performed “Do Like I Do” by South African rapper Kwesta and instantly captivated his classmates. The performance not only earned him praise but also sparked encouragement from peers and teachers who urged him to start writing his own music. It was in that moment that he realized music was more than just a hobby, it was his calling.
By Grade 7, Slash had regained focus, embraced discipline, and excelled academically, earning a first-class pass before enrolling at Maphilingo High School. It was during this period that he penned “Gogo Wami,” a song born out of grief, gratitude, and resilience. Written in Siswati, the track ensures that its message reaches everyone, both educated and uneducated, reflecting the raw pain often experienced by the less privileged in society.
“Gogo Wami” tells a true story of loss, survival, and appreciation. In the song, Slash pours out emotions he once had no outlet for, thanking his grandmother for raising him and his siblings after their parents’ passing. Produced by King Kangaroo at Swazi Swag Records, the track has already been described by early listeners as a “banger,” with many admitting it brought them to tears as they relate to similar life experiences.
Beyond “Gogo Wami,” Slash is currently working on a love-inspired collaboration titled “Ungabanaki” with South African poetess Arorisoe Morena. The song carries a powerful message to couples, encouraging them to ignore outside noise, focus on building their relationship, and grow together despite challenges.
Slash has steadily built his performance profile across Eswatini and, in 2024, expanded his footprint to Johannesburg, where he shared the stage with South African artists. Following his standout performance, he was invited for an interview at Hillbrow Radio Station, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Release dates for both “Gogo Wami” and “Ungabanaki” are yet to be confirmed. The songs will be available on major digital platforms including TikTok, Spotify, and Facebook.

With “Gogo Wami,” Slash is not just releasing a song, he is sharing a piece of his soul, proving that from pain can rise powerful purpose.
