EZULWINI – Former professional arts dancer Nosimilo Dlamini – stage name Sergy – of Nyonyane, Ezulwini, has learnt the importance of fusing dance and house music in DJing.

For the disc jockey, this combination is for the pleasure of her fans. She exclusively told Independent News that she has learnt that in over a decade of being a DJ, in order to move a crowd, one has got to appeal to their mood through music.

Prior to kicking-off her DJ career, Sergy spent years performing as a dancer and entertainer. It wasn’t until 2016, that she became a commercial DJ.

“I realised that the right song at the right time can move people just as much as a dance routine,” she says. “DJing gave me the freedom to tell stories through sound.”

Sergy mostly plays Afro-house, Afro-tech, 3-step and Afro-fusion. She said she was inspired by the likes of Black Coffee, Shimza, Caiiro and Zakes Bantwini to be rooted in African cultural sound.

Between 2022 and 2024, Sergy became a regular performer at major events such as the MTN Bushfire Festival, Swazi Rally and beyond the borders to Lesotho’s Maletsunyane Braai Festival. Moreover, she has performed in South Africa, Mozambique, Uganda and Nigeria, and her latest European tour to Belgium, the Netherlands and France.

She said these international shows have helped her sharpen her skills and raise her standards. Sergy’s movement on stage, and dancing, connects her with the crowd which sets her apart. To one watching her, her sets feel more like live shows than ordinary DJ performances.

As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Sergy has faced doubt and criticism. Some questioned her technical ability, but she chose to respond through hard work and consistency.

“I stay focused and disciplined. I let my work speak for me,” she says.

Her message to aspiring female DJs is simple: “Pray, believe in yourself and don’t wait for validation. Confidence is just as important as skill.”

As she looks toward 2026, Sergy hopes to perform at even bigger festivals across Africa and Europe. She also wants to support and guide young women who want to enter the DJ industry.

With her unique mix of music, movement and confidence, Sergy is no longer just a local talent, she is a name steadily making its mark on the global stage.
