Maseru – Lesotho has opened a new chapter in regional political cooperation by hosting the inaugural Pan African Inter Party Dialogue for Southern Africa in Maseru from 10 to 11 December 2025. The gathering was organised by the African Peer Review Mechanism as part of its effort to promote stronger democratic governance across the continent.

The conference brought together ruling and opposition parties from across the region under one continental mechanism for the first time. Delegates met to examine how political institutions can adapt to changing global dynamics, rapid technological shifts and rising expectations from citizens who are calling for more transparent and accountable leadership.

The dialogue forms part of wider continental commitments, including the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, Agenda 2063’s goal on good governance and the APRM Strategic Plan for 2025 to 2028. These frameworks seek to strengthen democratic norms, build institutional integrity and promote stability in African states.

Lesotho’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, Ambassador Ntsiuoa Sekete, said the gathering offered a timely moment for political parties to reflect on how to improve cooperation and rebuild public trust. He noted that creating spaces where political rivals can engage constructively is essential for peace and for prioritising national development in environments often marked by deep competition.

The meeting drew political leaders, governance experts, youth formations, women’s leagues and researchers who explored issues that affect the credibility of democratic systems. Their discussions covered electoral integrity, inclusive policy making, party financing and the expanding role of technology in shaping political communication. Lessons from APRM governance reviews were also examined to help participating states apply proven practices within their party structures.
