Manchester City eased to a 3-0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday, moving within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal. The Black Cats, who finished the game with 10 men, struggled to contain a dominant City side, as Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and Phil Foden all found the net.
The match kicked off with an evenly contested first 30 minutes, but City broke the deadlock in the 31st minute. French midfielder Amine Cherki, who was a key figure in the game, set up Dias with a simple lay-off. Dias’ powerful strike from 25 yards deflected off Dan Ballard and flew into the top-right corner.
City’s second came just four minutes later when Gvardiol met Foden’s in-swinging corner and powered the ball home with a downward header. Sunderland had a golden opportunity to respond when Xhaka’s half-volley rattled the base of the post.
The second half saw City create several chances, with Jeremy Doku curling a shot against the far post and Foden’s follow-up attempt blocked heroically by Ballard. Despite their best efforts, Sunderland couldn’t break through City’s defense.
In the 88th minute, the visitors’ woes worsened when substitute Luke O’Nien was shown a red card for a high challenge on Matheus Nunes. The dismissal left Sunderland with 10 men for the final moments of the match.
City nearly added a fourth when Cherki created a chance for Erling Haaland, whose header was cleared off the line by Lutsharel Geertruida. Cherki himself came close to a goal after forcing Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs into a fingertip save.
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris, celebrating his 50th birthday, was left frustrated as his side fell short despite a spirited performance. The visitors’ best chances were missed when Wilson Isidor was denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma in a one-on-one, and Xhaka struck the post.
The win took Manchester City back above Aston Villa into second place in the league, with 31 points. Sunderland remain in seventh place with 23 points.
