MASERU, December 1, 2025 – Lesotho has exceeded the global UNAIDS 95-95-95 HIV/AIDS targets, the country’s leadership announced during World AIDS Day commemorations in Maseru. The milestone was celebrated at a vibrant ceremony attended by His Majesty King Letsie III, Her Majesty Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso, Prime Minister Sam Matekane, Deputy Prime Minister Justice Majara, Health Minister Selibe Mochoboroane, senior government officials, heads of diplomatic missions, UN representatives, civil society groups, and development partners.
King Letsie III acknowledged the nation’s long and difficult battle against HIV/AIDS, remembering those who have lost their lives and thanking partners for their sustained support. “It is thanks to your unwavering support that Lesotho has achieved many successes,” he said.
The Kingdom now reports that 97% of people living with HIV know their status, 97% of those diagnosed are receiving treatment, and 99% of people on treatment are virally suppressed.
The King also announced the forthcoming introduction of Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly injectable HIV preventive medication, set to roll out by February 2026. He described the treatment as a potential game-changer in prevention efforts.
Government officials and partners reaffirmed their commitment to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. King Letsie added that continued unity, innovation, and focus on marginalized communities would be key to sustaining progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
